If your video card fan is sounding labored, it can impact your enjoyment of your computer use in multiple ways. This episode focuses on GPU issues, which can cause issues such as computer crashes, black screens, and visual artifacts. DIY in 5 can help you handle it!
Visual artifacts
If you see any weird visuals such as missing or deformed geometry, wonky textures, flickering elements, or other weird graphic issues, you should check the video card drivers and upgrade to the latest driver. This will resolve most visual artifact issues, unless they are caused by heat. Dealing with that will require opening up the PC to make sure the video card fans are dust- and debris-free. While you have the case open, check on the rest of the fans, and the PC in general. Do not discount potential airflow problems. Poor airflow can definitely be a culprit when it comes to heat issues. If your PC is a rat’s nest of dust and cables, it may be a good idea to revisit cable management. Hopefully, these tips will help you resolve the visual artifacts issues you’re having.
Crashes
Computer or game crashes are very aggravating, especially when they break your flow and ruin substantial amounts of progress. To solve this issue, as before, you should be running the latest video card drivers. Next, disable your antivirus, or any software that runs during the game operation. If this fails, try running the game in Administrator mode. Is the crash the whole computer, or just the game? If your whole computer crashes, such as blue screening or shutting off, you should check the CPU, but more likely the power supply. It could be that the game’s peak performance is requesting more power than the power supply can sustain with stability. If it isn’t the CPU or power supply, contact the OEM to see if there’s an issue on their side. As in our previous video, checking the BIOS after crashes to identify the requested voltage is possible.
Black screen
Game crashes and computer crashes are different. So are game crashes and ‘black screens’. This issue is generally caused by a PC asking for a resolution that it cannot support. This may be an issue of video drivers. You could be in a situation where you resolve prior game performance issues and find yourself with intermittent black screens where the monitor goes blank. We recommend checking the release notes of the video driver. If they don’t specifically address black screen issues, reach out to the OEM. In most cases, video driver updates will solve these issues.
Overclocking
Overclocking is never fully guaranteed. If you’re still experiencing issues, try removing the overclock and repeat these steps. If the computer is stable, you’ll need to find an overclock that will work for you and your PC.
Until next time, hope that your fans sound less horrifying in the future!
