Turnitin: How High Availability SageMaker Endpoints Detect AI Writing and Uphold Academic Integrity

Turnitin is a global company dedicated to ensuring the integrity of education, processing and detecting plagiarism at an incredible rate - up to two million papers in a single day. When ChatGPT was released on November 30, 2022, the engineering team needed to bring their existing AI Detection model into production as quickly as possible, without sacrificing accuracy or speed. This architecture overview covers the challenges they faced adapting the proof-of-concept to a serverless architecture, scaling SageMaker, collecting model performance data, and supporting real-time front-end requests, while minimizing new load to existing services. The work was done in an unusually compact timeline - about 8 weeks - for an April 4, 2023 launch with minimal defects and no impact to customers. Through July 31, 2023, Turnitin has reviewed more than 76 million papers. Of those papers, over 2.5 million were flagged with having at least 80% AI writing present and nearly 8.1 million were flagged as having more than 20% AI writing present.
