If you’ve just picked up a new SSD, this video will help you optimize your use of it. We have five tips to help you get the most out of your drive.
Free space
Tip one: leave some free space on your SSD! Yes, you likely bought this drive with the thought of using that new capacity. However, leaving a minimum of 10% capacity unused means that that space can be used for general maintenance and OS background operations, increasing the drive’s speed and your user experience. It also increases the longevity of the SSD!
Kingston SSD Manager
Tip two: use Kingston’s SSD Manager (KSM). It’s a great tool for monitoring your SSD’s health, status, and disk usage. It also helps you update the drive’s firmware or securely erase data if needed. Understanding your drive’s condition can help you identify potential issues before they become problems. When you open KSM you’ll see an Acronis tab. You can only use Acronis True Image for Kingston if you have a Kingston SSD installed in your PC. Acronis is software that offers drive cloning as well as ransomware protection.
Stay cool
Tip three: ensure everything stays cool! Keeping your computer cool is important for overall system health and performance. Keeping your SSD cool can be particularly helpful in prolonging its lifespan, allowing it not only to reach max performance but also sustain that high performance for longer periods of time. Some drives, like the KC3000 NVMe M.2 SSD, come with a heat spreader to keep the SSD cool. For gamers, the Kingston FURY Renegade SSD with heatsink is a great choice for long gaming sessions.
Avoid shutdowns
Tip four: watch the shutdowns. Try never to force a shutdown of your device. Unexpected or forced shutdowns can potentially corrupt any data you have stored.
Backup
Tip five: routinely backup your data. Any errors could compromise your valuable data. Format that drive and restore everything safely.
Sidebar: for those dealing with data center SSDs, these same tips for personal SSDs can also improve the longevity of enterprise data center drives.
Installing and managing a new SSD presents a number of factors to consider, but with these tips you’re off to a great start. If you found the video helpful, please pass it along to a friend! See you next time for more DIYin5!
