Vauxhall badly needs to mark its identity with the latest Astra (known as the Opel Astra overseas). The previous model was a solid package, if a touch bland, and in sharing its platform with other Stellantis hatchbacks, this new Astra has an even tougher time separating itself from the crowd. But straight off the bat, those bold looks do it a few favours. With its wide stance, square jaw line and Vauxhall's Vizor front panel, it's certainly one of the more interesting looking hatchbacks on sale.

Under the skin, the new Astra rides on the same EMP2 architecture as the Peugeot 308 and DS 4, which opens the door to electrification. A fully-electric Astra-e is on the way, but we're testing the plug-in hybrid variant in this review. With brand new infotainment tech, a revamped interior and fresh underpinnings, the new Astra has the tools to do battle with the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Skoda Octavia, but can it take top spot? Yousuf Ashraf finds out in this in-depth review, and reveals five ways that the new Astra is better than the old one.
