A lot of the current news consumption and sharing takes place online, through traditional news outlets or new media. This research discusses different patterns of news sharing through images and challenges in designing tools that support the engagement with diverse opinions in news. The first part of the talk will focus on analysis done on the type of memes and images people share during popular events such as campaigns for marriage equality, the Boston Marathon or other political issues. Our research analyses the diversity of discussion threads and sources that are revealed through annotated images. The second part of the talk will focus on how social annotations of news articles influences user behavior. We will discuss how enhancing user interfaces can encourage user engagement.
