eScience and activities that build on e-infrastructure continue to grow rapidly and increasingly affect science and society. Vital to this growth are the availability and robustness of the underlying infrastructures and the ability, often seeded by EU-level project funding, to bring large-scale collaborative teams together to pursue science issues on the infrastructures. This session at the IEEE e-Science Workshop 2011 explores the challenges that new communities must overcome to access e-infrastructures, such as tools to work with the infrastructure, requirements to extend the infrastructure into new realms of operation or access paradigms, and working with communities of different technical and cultural backgrounds. We discuss these issues from the perspective of our experience in bringing the fusion community closer to eScience and e-infrastructure activities in Europe.
