Post the 9/11 attacks the National Security Administration (NSA) acquired a research project called Total Information Awareness that uses advanced data-mining techniques to collect mountains of dataΓÇöand unfortunately traps countless innocent citizens in its ΓÇ£electronic netsΓÇ¥. After the NSAΓÇÖs warrantless surveillance was exposed in 2005, Congress passed largely cosmetic reforms that left the program intact, though it is now a secretly funded operation or a ΓÇ£black opΓÇ¥ that is protected from public scrutiny. Despite billions of dollars being spent on technology and digital spycraft, we still donΓÇÖt have the tools to discern future threats in the vast data cloud. When the next security crisis comes, will we be able to identity the real enemies or will the war be with our civil liberties?
