You may have heard that Nokia will be releasing about 900 custom made Nokia Lumia 900 phones with an etched Batman logo on the back, special packaging, and some special Batman-related software. It looks like some Batman branded Lumia 710 battery covers are making the rounds too. It turns out the Batman-related software is now available for all Nokia branded Windows Phones, and it actually includes some very fun features. At first you'd probably think that this "The Dark Knight Rises" app might be just some lame movie-related content like a few trailer videos, some pictures, and a twitter feed. All of that stuff is certainly there, but there's also a very innovative social networking game built in.
It's kind of interesting to see Nokia team up with this Batman movie since Nokia is kind of like a fallen super hero who was once rich and strong, but in recent years they have certainly fallen quite a bit. This year is really their attempt to get up off the ground and team up with "The Dark Knight Rises" seems like a perfect fit.
But let's get back to that innovative social networking game I was talking about. One of the panels in the app lets you log into your Foursquare account and then set yourself as either Batman or Bane. From there, you get to "claim" locations of businesses on the map within your physical vicinity. Once you claim it, you get some point and that location becomes one of the places you need to defend. If some one else with the same app is physically nearby, it seems like they can attack your locations and take them over for more points. I haven't found anyone else in the vicinity who is using the same app yet, so unforunately I haven't been able to attack anyone just yet. As you play the game of course you earn points, but you also unlock awards. The awards generally consist of nicely designed phone wallpaper images as well as downloadable ringtones.
In addition to the usual movie trailer links, there is also the "Dark Knight Rises" related twitter feed, information about the movie's cast, a synopsis, and one more cool thing; a countdown to the premiere of the movie with a map of nearby movie theaters where you can go to see the movie.
I was honestly expecting to uninstall this app shortly after trying it out, but this social networking location-based game has peaked my interest and I'm definitely going to try to find some other users to compete against in my travels.
