About a decade ago, back when I was a Newton user, I saw a radically new concept for interacting with computers and PDAs. Instead of the app-centric metaphor, or desktop/filing cabinet metaphor of the day, this concept focused on your timeline. Information was presented in a cascading deck of "cards" with the front-most card being what you were working on at the present, and cards behind it what you'd worked on previously.
These cards could be representative of emails, faxes, texts, phone calls, documents, spreadsheets, charts, calendar events, any any number of other representative information.
Instead of opening an application, then finding and opening a particular file, you could simply flip through your deck until you found what you were looking for, or use a search engine to quickly find that you were looking for. The theory being that the most important (and most relevant information) would be closest to the top of the stack.
Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, the app never made it out of the concept phase, but I've been keeping my eyes open for something similar ever since.
I saw SlideScreen a while ago and put it on my agenda for apps to try out. It wasn't exactly the "life stream" concept that I had seen before, but it was vaguely familiar.
