Talk 1: Convergence research in the UK (15 mins) The convergence of computer vision and computer graphics is recognized as a significant and developing research area within the UK. Many active high-quality groups and funding opportunities exist for collaboration both domestically and internationally. This talk gives a brief tour of UK convergence research. Talk 2: Artistic rendering in the convergence area (40 mins) Convergence research at Bath focuses upon the synthesis of artwork from real-world images and video. By harnessing both novel and existing Computer Vision techniques to analyse two dimensional source content, we are able to extract salient information for subsequent rendering in a wide gamut of non-photorealistic styles. In this talk we will describe and demonstrate the results of robust techniques for processing video into cartoon styles; exhibiting both motion emphasis (e.g. streak-lines, deformation) and temporally coherent artistic stylisation (e.g. painting, cartoon shading). We will also present static NPR algorithms that harness novel image salience measures to drive the generation of Cubist and Futurist-like art, as well as guide genetic search techniques to evolve salient paintings. Finally, we will summarise recent research into a user-trainable measure of image salience, which in turn has motivated the development of an algebra over eigenmodels, Gaussian mixtures, and Hidden Markov Models.
