This session emphasizes ways cloud-based big data analytics are advancing medical research and data analysis through stories from The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). NMDP is focused on finding better matches for bone marrow recipients utilizing DNA analysis. They leverage AWS services like EMR, S3, Athena, and other services to identify faster ways to improve marrow matches to save more lives. Nephele is a project from the NIAID that brings together microbiome data and analysis tools in a cloud computing environment. It aims to address a major challenge facing researchers today namely, analyzing, transferring, and storing biomedical "big data" through the use of cloud-based resources. As the scientific and technological landscape continues to evolve, NIAID attempts to keep pace by applying lessons learned from Nephele to build an improved scientific SaaS offering that uses more fit-for-purpose AWS services, emphasizes data sharing and analysis reproducibility, and doubles down on automation and security. Join this session to learn more about the next-generation of medical analysis using cloud technology.
