This session highlights how democratizing access to information fosters innovation, improves service delivery, and engages citizens to address big societal challenges. As data becomes more widely available, having access to scalable technology and the multiple data sources that can feed into the technology solution can help create solutions for significant problems in the world. You will hear how the U.S. Treasury launched the USAspending.Gov public dataset as an Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) snapshot to allow the public to access a database of all federal spending data in minutes, making this the first time government agencies have made public expenditures available in one place. You will also hear from the U.S. Census Bureau and how they released the American Community Survey (ACS) Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) as an AWS Public Dataset. Now, anyone can access and analyze PUMS data in the cloud without needing to download and store their own copy. Attend this session to hear real examples of open data enabling transparency, access, and better citizen services.
