For Cloudinary, their media asset store on S3 is absolutely critical. To increase availability and mitigate risk, they store a 2nd copy of assets in a separate bucket in a 2nd AWS region owned by a separate AWS account. But rather than store a 2nd copy of all assets, they employ a smart algorithm that only replicates assets that would be hard to re-create in the event of a failover - their custom caching and compute layer takes care of the rest. Using this architecture they’re fully regionally redundant, effective with storage volume, and secure.
