Design Is [History] : Building a Presidential Museum for the Future

Design Is […] is a monthly speaker series on the future of design and creativity. Each public talk is centered on a theme, and the series highlights a broad range of perspectives on everything from human-centered design to VR and ethics.

Many people think of museums, especially Presidential museums and libraries, as being tied resolutely to the past. Yet the work of the 21st-century museum must be aligned with a broader understanding of social infrastructure that speaks to the dynamic ways in which history informs the present and helps shape the future.

In this talk, Louise shares conceptual thinking about the Obama Presidential Center Museum as a new model for an innovative social and cultural institution. While the museum will privilege the telling of a nuanced history, the Obama Foundation’s central mission of civic engagement opens up space for the visitor to investigate, curate, and forge their own connections between past and present. The Presidential Museum of the future accentuates key questions about museum-making, and the forging of a nonpartisan “creative commons” that is at once flexible, participatory, and inclusive.
