Making new facial expressions for your VRChat avatar is super easy! Follow these 3 steps to add several different kinds of animations to your avatar model’s range of expressions. You’ll be able to activate them by making hand gestures with your avatar in VRChat.
Keep in mind that you can get the best VRChat experience by using the VR gear below.
𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗩𝗥𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵: 👇
✅ Wireless PC VR using VIVE Focus Vision → htcvive.co/4l6JMTv
✅ Face tracking using Facial Tracker for Focus Series → htcvive.co/4jb0ZcS
✅ Full-body tracking using VIVE Ultimate Trackers → htcvive.co/3RnTXoZ
Here are the steps to making your emotions and gestures come to life:
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 1️⃣: Create animations for your model in VRChat. Click on your model in Hierarchy and then CTRL + D to duplicate your model. This will allow us to create animations on the duplicated model so that we don’t mess up how the original looks.
Click on that original model in Hierarchy and turn it off in Inspector so that you don’t accidentally edit that one.
Click on the copied version. Open your Animation window and click Create to create a new animation. We start by creating an excited face expression, but you can choose whatever face expression you want. Save it!
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 2️⃣: To connect your expression to your gesture, go to the Project section and find the Packages folder. Scroll to VRChat SDK Avatars and go into the Samples folder - AV3 Demo Assets - Animation - Controllers and find vrc_AvatarV3HandsLayer.1controller. Click CTRL + D to duplicate this so you still have an original copy of the hands layer in case things go wrong or you need to restart.
Grab that and scroll up in the Project folder and drop it into Assets. Go back to Assets and you should see it appear there. Right-click and rename it to your model’s name followed by “FX.”
Double click this to open it. If this tab doesn’t show up, go to Window - Animation - Animator. Click the settings gear wheel on AllParts, click Mask, and hit DELETE. Next, go to Left Hand and do the same thing. Then go to Right Hand and do the same thing again.
Click on Left Hand and select all of the boxes that are named after hand gestures. Hold SHIFT to grab Idle 2 as well as uncheck the Motion Time parameter and check Write Defaults. You can click the middle mouse button to move this around. Do this for Right Hand as well.
Go through each gesture individually and delete its Motion. Next decide which hand gesture you want to activate your excited animation ... or that expression you were going to use to scare your friend. Then drag that animation (the triangle icon) into the Motion field.
You can do this exact same process for each expression you want to link to a hand gesture. You will need to go back to your Scene, click the drop-down beside the animation name and then Create New Clip..., which will be starting the steps of setting your next emote.
You can add a unique emotion to each hand gesture per each hand. That brings you up to 14 total. You could probably add even more if you added more hand gestures, but that is not something we’ve tried yet. If you have, let us know how that works in the comments!
️𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 3️⃣: Upload your model to VRChat and test. You can bring your model into VRChat and try activating your custom expressions with gestures. The controls will be different depending on the VR headset you are using.
If you are on desktop, you can activate the expression by clicking the left or right SHIFT key + F1– F8 on your keyboard.
These 3 steps will get you well on your way to making expressions tied to gestures in VRChat!
