The most visible shakeup to Apple's smartphone catalog in 2025 is the iPhone Air. It’s a phone whose whole identity revolves around being skinny – and the compromises it makes to get there aren't as comprehensive as you might think.

Right alongside the iPhone Air sits the iPhone 17 Pro (and its larger sibling the iPhone 17 Pro Max). It’s the least-Apple-looking phone I’ve seen in almost a decade, a monster muscle car whose ponderous plateau projects pure power. If you've ever wondered what an iPhone designed by Xiaomi or Oppo might look like (and let's be real: who hasn't?) ... you have one less question to keep you up at night.

In the leaks and the renders and the mockups, these designs seemed derivative, perhaps evidence of Apple aping Android, and fueling the sense that perhaps the company was running out of ideas. But in person? The truth is far more interesting.
