Protecting Colombia’s endangered wildlife with Project SPARROW

Deforestation and human activity are threatening Colombia’s Middle Magdalena Valley, an endangered wildlife and ecosystem in north-central Colombia. Project SPARROW is stepping in with AI-powered conservation to help preserve this rich natural heritage. Developed by Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab, this initiative equips Fundación Biodiversa with solar-powered cameras and microphones that stream wildlife data via satellite to the cloud. AI models analyze the sounds and images instantly, giving researchers real-time insights without needing to trek into remote terrain. Scalable and open source, this breakthrough solution is poised to protect endangered ecosystems around the world.
