Have you seen surreal, colorful night sky photos of the Milky Way or streaks of light in a cityscape and wonder how this is done? It’s done using long exposure photography settings on a DSLR camera which can result in some great art photos. Today we will give you a long exposure photography tutorial which will work on Canon, Nikon and most other DSLR brands. You must shoot with a tripod for long exposure photos. Shooting by hand is just not practical. Any movements or vibration will cause your photo to come out blurry and unusable. A remote trigger will help as well. Long exposure images achieve the greatest results when you plan ahead. For traditional long exposure photos paying attention to detail and composing your picture for interesting architectural angles, or capturing the galaxy in the night sky will create the best and most interesting images. The unexpected benefits will be seeing all the unique and interesting lights that show up in your photo that you don’t readily see with your naked eye. Prevent light leaks is from your viewfinder by shutting it and using the display only if the camera has that option or cover it with a piece of black tape.

Long exposure photography is similar to light painting which we covered in an episode of indieHack. youtube.com/watch?v=CFlgMdiZHh...
