Installing RAM in a Dell laptop is a quick and easy way to speed up your computer. Here's how it's done.
1. Make sure that the RAM module that you buy is compatible your Dell laptop. At kingston.com/us/memory/search/... you can find a handy online tool to help you can easily find which RAM module is compatible with your computer.
2. Shutdown your computer.
3. Clean you work surface.
4. Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface to prevent damage to any components.
5. Get a philips head screw driver.
6. Remove the battery.
7. Just to be sure all the remaining power is drained from the computer press the power button after the battery is removed.
8. Find where the memory is located on your computer. Sometimes it'll be identified on the underside of your computer. Otherwise you'll need to check Dell's website or your owner’s manual before you begin.
9. Remove the small screws to access the memory but be sure to set the screws in a safe place so they don't get lost. Now you should have a clear view of the old memory in your computer.
10. Carefully push the metal clips on both sides of the RAM module outwards to release the first module. You'll notice it pop-up slightly making it easy to slide out from the memory slot. If you're installing two memory modules, do the same with the second memory, as well. This can sometimes be next to or even underneath, the first module you removed.
11. Insert the new RAM module. It's important to notice the alignment notch on the memory that lines up with the notch on the memory slot in your computer. If it doesn't line up, flip it around and slide in the RAM module at roughly a 45 degree angle, but don't to force it in. The memory will fit snugly into place with light, but firm pressure. Once it's in place, press down on the outside edges until you hear the clips on the sides snap into place letting you know the memory is secure. If you're adding more than one, repeat this process for the other module.
12. Replace the cover and Screw it into place.
13. Insert the battery.
14. Turn on your computer. On some Dell laptop models, it may alert you that the amount of memory has changed. Don't worry, just enter the BIOS and accept the chances. And that's it.
