Getting the most from a USB flash drive on a Windows PC is excellent for the ease of storing and sharing files. These instructions will help you optimize your USB usage.
First, find an open USB port on your computer and plug it in. This may trigger a prompt for you to choose what you’d like to do with your device. If not, open File Explorer by clicking on the folder icon in the taskbar or holding down the Windows key on your keyboard and tapping the ‘e’ key. In the new window, select the USB flash drive, which is usually either drive D or F, depending on the combination of hard drives or disk drives on your computer.
Saving files to your flash drive
You can save files (such as documents, photos and music) to your USB flash drive in multiple ways. Drag and drop allows you to select a file (or several files) and quickly drag them to the USB drive with your mouse. Make sure the icons of the files you want to save and the USB drive window are both visible. Highlight the files that you want to save, then drag and drop them in the USB drive window. Or you can drag and drop the files directly to the USB drive icon. To copy and paste, highlight what you want to copy and right click for additional commands. Select Copy, then right click on the USB drive folder and select Paste. This will save the files to the new location. You can also paste files directly to the USB drive icon.
In applications like Word or PowerPoint, you can use the Save As method, which allows you to save documents to a specific location, like a USB drive. From within the app, select File (or the Office logo), then click on Save As. Navigate to the USB drive then click Save.
Deleting files and formatting your flash drive
To delete files from your USB drive, right click on the file to bring up additional commands, then click Delete. You can also drag files from the USB drive window to the Recycle Bin, same as you would with other computer files.
Formatting the drive clears it completely, and may be necessary to save larger files or make the drive compatible with non-Windows operating systems. Open File Explorer. Right click on the USB flash drive. Select Format from the menu. In the Format window, you can change the file system, drive name, or allocation size. Use the default settings or select the option you need, but remember clicking Start will format the drive and erase all of your data.
Removing your flash drive
Ejecting your USB drive safely before removing it from the computer is important for file integrity. From the File Explorer window, right click on the USB drive, select Eject and wait for the “Safe to remove hardware” message to appear on screen before you remove the drive. You may also eject the drive via the taskbar. Click the arrow at the bottom right of the screen by the time and date, and click on the USB icon, then click Eject on your USB drive.
Correct usage of your USB flash drive will ensure your files remain safe and secure. Thanks for watching, and for additional questions, contact kingston.com/support.
