Before he headed out to Dallas Fan Expo, Adam took Tested member questions on ... everything! Our next live stream will be Wednesday, June 12.
0:00:00 Introduction
0:03:58 With all the traveling you do, how do you deal with the jet lag? Or do you just try and stay on PT while you're away?
0:11:14 Recently I made a small geegaw for myself, nothing special. But I felt the maker’s pride of accomplishment and, realizing I had excess materials, made another for a family member. A couple of days later I was talking to them on the phone and asked if they got it and what they thought of it. They confirmed they did get it but had no use for it so they threw it away. They knew prior to this that I'd made it. This has really knocked my confidence because although the original was for myself, the fact that it was so casually dismissed and tossed after I'd made the effort is quite hurtful. I find myself very reluctant to continue making because in my head it's clearly no good. Have you had something like this happen and if so how do you get past that? I don't want to stop making but I don't like this feeling of being no good.
0:20:56 Hey Adam, I thought I'd answer a question for you! Your Dumore Sensitve Drill press is one of a handful that were manufactured under license by Kelston Engineering which came with the special table!
0:22:19 So I’m mid-process of building an 8’x8’ garden shed out of pallets and other scrounged materials. It’s an ethos of mine to repurpose as much as possible. Do you have a view on repurposing materials?
0:26:31 Curious to hear if you’ve ever considered Blacksmithing/Hot-Metalwork? I’ve found it to be fantastically freeing and intuitive (outside of planning around a 1800+ degree box in your workspace lol). Thanks!
0:28:49 My question is about dynamic pricing on a build. My fear is always quoting less than what it will take to complete something, and I'll end up breaking even or worse. With so many variables in a unique project, does it ever make sense/is it common to tell the client this is my best estimate on price now, but as we get into the weeds on the build, the final price could increase? If so, how would you approach that conversation and protect yourself along the way?
0:36:22 Adam talks about communication for client relationships
0:37:20 A friend is debating starting a home yarn knitting business - making instructional videos, creating knitting patterns and occasionally selling things she knits. Unfortunately, she has this "retail" mindset where she tries to justify everything with math (cost of materials + hours spent x $ per hour = sell price) and assumes that every potential customer will compare her pricing to Walmart. I can't get her to understand that being a freelancer doesn't work like that. Can you explain it better?
0:44:09 What is your optimum time of day for creativity?
0:44:18 Thank you for sharing so much of your process, shop, experiences, etc. When I start a project I try to think "Hmm, how would Adam Savage approach this?" and somehow that magically helps me come up with more ideas, lol.
0:46:19 I loved your video on vacuforming. Im thinking of getting a vacuformer to make life sized props. Do you have a favourite size vacformer for this purpose.
0:49:36 I am lucky enough to "retire" early (I'm 48) and what I really want to do with my time is start a new makerspace in my area since we don't have one. I want to help people new to the hobby learn and grow. Do you have any ideas or suggestions on how to get a new makerspace up and running?
0:55:24 Which all the recent changes to your shop what has become your favorite part of shop and least favorite?
0:56:49 Which type of supervisor do you find more frustrating to work for, micromanagers or laissez-faire?
0:58:57 Do you have a favorite career comeback, last hurrah, or swan song? Whatever the discipline – art, sports, science, public service… someone whose distinguished accomplishments everyone assumed were behind them, who then unexpectedly knocked another one out of the park?
