0:00:49 When and why do you hand-saw pieces of wood vs chucking it on your table/band saw?
0:03:37 When you have a small or limited work space, what types of tools and storage do you recommend for a general maker? I have a desk space and not a full shop yet and want to maximize the space for making.
0:08:24 Is there a tool in your collection, which rarely gets used, but is one which always proves it’s worth when it is used?
0:10:25 I often get myself into trouble by thinking I can do DIY jobs around the house myself rather than paying to get a professional in. Have you ever been caught out thinking ‘I can do that!’
0:15:59 Have you been watching Alien Earth ?
0:16:53 I’ve really enjoyed your stories about scavenging art supplies. Partly because they’re fun, but also because I think too many people believe they don’t have enough money to make things, and I want that to change. Some of the coolest stuff I’ve seen is made from garbage picked up on the beach, stuff from recycling bins, etc. Do you have favorite trash art/found object art/upcycled art makers?
0:27:53 As a maker I find it hard to get over the hump of being dissatisfied with my level of ability. It’s easy to not want to continue a project because I can’t make it look the way I want it to in my head. Do you have tips for how to get over or around that? It takes so much joy out of the process for me!
0:27:53 You’ve spent decades demystifying science and fabrication—what’s one myth about creativity or failure that you wish you could destroy for every aspiring maker before beginning even their first project?
0:34:12 You have talked about balancing your work life and your time with family, like how you’d leave the MythBusters set after a wild time and come home trying to contain your excitement while dealing with your spouse and the twins. How did you learn to do this and continue to practice this method of making yourself available to your personal life while excited about work? How does Ms. Don't Try This help you with the realization and the practice of this principle?
0:38:45 Why is the cleanliness of the prison on Narkana 5 so terrifying in Andor vs. the regular grime of the rest of the universe?
0:40:42 In my younger years, my first job was to learn the ins-and-out of working in a welding/machining shop. MythBusters came out around that time and made me appreciate the chance I had to learn how to work with serious tools (MIG welders, lathes, CO2 lasers, etc.) Is there a career you would have explored or been curious about in a different life just based on the type of work done there?
0:46:18 After years of miniature wargaming, I'm getting into N-scale railroading. My desire is more to create interesting dioramas with trains running through them than to actually operate the switching aspect. I like the theatrical aspect of creating a scene in miniature, then a bit of null space, followed by another different scene. What tips and tricks do you have for someone working in a 1 to 160 scale for making scenes as theatrical and immersive as possible - telling an interesting story - but not trying to cram in every detail imaginable?
0:55:12 I have been in a making funk recently. I have not been making things I want to wake up to, and I have been finding it hard to remember the things I wanted to make. I was wondering how do you get out of that type of funk?
