What UV Light Revealed in This 200-Year-Old Painting

One challenge of conservators everywhere is how to assess and analyze an artifact -- such as this 1808 pastel of Philadelphia businessman Michael Gratz -- safely and non-invasively. In our FIRST visit to Smithsonian's @nationalportraitgallery, contract paintings conservator Anna Ersenkal shows Adam Savage how she and her team use ultraviolet induced visible fluorescence photography and infrared imaging to uncover a painting's secrets and inform next steps in the conservation and/or restoration process.
