"It is not a phablet." HTC's stern declaration to the assembled press regarding the category of its latest Android smartphone was a little odd when it hit our ears at this morning's announcement, but the reason for the fuss quickly became apparent. Any time a company launches a device that breaks the five-inch-display barrier, there's bound to be speculation about its size -surely mammoth- and its weight -surely massive. In heading off the "phablet" talk right at the top of the announcement, HTC and Verizon let everyone know that despite its massive screen, the new Droid DNA was very definitely 100% smartphone, 0% tablet.
The screen's size isn't the only distinction the DNA enjoys; it's the first 1080p-capable smartphone display to hit American shores, and it features viewing angles up to 80 degrees, as well as brightness that HTC claims beats the Galaxy S III's display by 50%.
Add in some Beats audio, wireless charging, new camera software, and a bunch of features inherited from the Windows Phone 8X, and you've got yourself a recipe for one brutal beast of a smartphone. Thanks to the fine folks at HTC and Verizon Wireless, we've got ourselves a review unit of our very own. Check out our hands-on treatment from this morning's announcement, then hop on down to the video below to see it unboxed. Or reverse that order; we don't care. Do what feels right. Then hold tight for a few days, because we've got a full review of the Droid DNA by HTC coming as fast as our fingers will allow.
