In 2002 Max McKeown discussed, at Microsoft, “Why the World Hates Microsoft and Why We Should Care” and in 2004 he explored ways in which “Indifference is Death” to innovation and performance. This time he will consider the question, “Can Humanity Overcome Organization?” looking first at opposing examples that show “organization” (bureaucracy, arrogance, apathy, confusion, impatience, secrecy, obedience, division) overcoming “humanity” (empathy, insight, dissent, flow, play, adventure, honesty, fulfillment, unity) with current and historic examples from business and society. How can we realistically propose ways to halt this process? Along the way he will discuss other questions, such as: How is progress made? Can Microsoft grow to 90,000 people without shrinking? Can it ever the surprise the market (in a good way) again? How do you lead something this big and smart? What are the benefits of big vs. little? Hard/soft? Quick/slow? Right/left? Think/act? Change campaigns vs. change management? The limits of strategic planning/strategy as art? And perhaps at the end we will assert 5 new laws of progress…
