We show you three hacks for the DJI Phantom and other drones: Return to sender, $7 DIY ND filters for the camera, and a $15 DIY Durable Phantom Case using the foam box that it came with. These drone tips and tricks will help crafty drone pilots you save money.
The return to sender hack
Materials:
• A pen and a sticker labeler or an electronic labeler
How it’s done:
• Label your drone with your name and phone number in case of a large wind gust, poor navigation around trees, or an unexpected landing from a battery failure or any other situation where you might not be able to retrieve your drone. A kind person might return your lost and found drone to you if they can contact you!
$7 DIY ND (neutral density) filters for the camera to reduce brightness
Materials:
• Scissors
• A precision knife blade like an X-ACTO knife or snap-blade
• A pen
• A lighting gel sample pack (we used Rosco Cinegel)
How it’s done:
• Carefully remove the lens protector ring and set it aside.
• Remove the rubber seal inside the ring taking special care to not damage it. Set it aside, you’ll need it for later.
• Measure the diameter of the protector ring and create your pattern.
• Find a grey gel in the gel sample pack.
• Trace your pattern onto the desired gels, and cut them out.
• Simply place the new ND filter inside the lens protector ring, making sure there are no bends or twists or bubbles.
• Place the small rubber seal/gasket and re-attach the ring to the camera.
