When I first started Into The Fold, it was because I saw flexible screens eventually spreading beyond handhelds to enhance every category of consumer tech. Four and a half years later, folding phones are very much a thing … but the push beyond the phone has stalled: wearables got boring instead of getting ambitious, and laptops, well – even great hardware can only do so much with software that’s not built for a screen that changes shape.
So what if you could divorce the benefits of a foldable from the underlying compute? Well, you’d get a 17-inch display that collapses into the footprint of a 13-inch one … that runs any software you want. This is the ZenScreen Fold, a mobile monitor from ASUS – and as a concept it’s probably the most versatile foldable I’ve used. The biggest catch is the price you’ll pay to make it more than a concept.
