MicroSD cards are tiny but mighty storage wafers that come in different formats, and this video will break them down.

microSD Express
MicroSD Express is the new kid on the block, using PCIe tech (discernable thanks to the second row of pins on its back) that makes them significantly faster than traditional microSDs.
Though the microSD Express debuted back in 2019, most devices still use microSD UHS-I or UHS-II. A major exception is the Nintendo Switch 2, which uses the microSD Express as its baseline storage format, a big leap forward in the gaming handheld market. It offers up to 985MB/s read speed, about three times faster than the fastest non-Express microSD card. In practice, it means shorter load times and smoother gameplay for happier humans.

What’s the catch?
However, faster doesn’t always mean better. Regular microSD works perfectly fine for everyday files like audio or low-res photos. While microSD Express is backwards compatible, devices using the UHS-II interface will mean that the Express card drops to UHS-I speeds, slower than a UHS-II card. This plus the relative novelty of the tech means microSD Express is much more expensive.
In 2023, microSD Express received a level up courtesy of an upgrade that improved multi-stream access, helping it handle big files without corruption, as well as making power usage more efficient to prevent overheating.

Speed classes explained
MicroSD Express cards also heralded new SD Express Speed Classes: 150, 300, 450, 600. Each number represents sustained write speeds, e.g. a Class 150 guarantees 150MB/s, while a Class 300 could split its bandwidth across multiple streams, perhaps offering 160MB/s for one and seven others at 20MB/s each. Think of them like LEGO for storage performance.
While visually these little cards may look mostly the same, they are definitely different and you should take care to choose one compatible with your device. If the video helped clear things up or clear your storage, don’t forget to like/subscribe/hype, and see you next time!
